Most people building an automated business buy Hands and never build a Brain. They end up with eleven clever tools that each keep their own records — and a business that exists as a rumour distributed across a dozen SaaS products.
The five-question test, the full table schema, and the naming convention are all on this page. No email needed for any of it.
Tick every question you could answer right now, in under ten seconds, from a single screen — without opening a second tool.
One Airtable base called Command Center. Four tables to start, plus two logs you add later — the Automation Log in Chapter 3, the Support Log in Chapter 9. This is the whole thing, and you can build it by hand in about forty minutes.
Log every support question for thirty days before you automate any of it. Minutes to Answer is the field that earns its keep: sort by it descending and the top four rows are your entire deflection backlog. Everything below them is a long tail you should keep answering by hand.
Resist designing this properly. You'll want to add fields for things you might need later, and every one of those is a small tax you pay forever in a form you'll never fill in. Four tables, obvious fields, move on — you'll add what you actually need when you actually need it, and it'll take four minutes.
Adopt this at three scenarios. At nineteen it's a renaming project you'll never schedule.
You can tell what each one does without opening it — and more importantly, which machine it belongs to, which is how you'll search when something breaks at 10pm.
Every scenario gets an error route that writes a row to the Automation Log. And every chain writes one row when it runs — success or failure. That's one extra operation per execution, which at $12 for 10,000 operations is a rounding error, and it buys you the single most valuable thing in an automated business: a place to look.
Dana's four hours of archaeology becomes four minutes. The eleven days of silence become however long it takes to glance at a table on Sunday.
Everything above is enough to build this by hand in about forty minutes. The template makes it about four.
It's a base template and a blueprint file — I can't paste those into a web page, so tell me where to send them.
One email a week about building things that run without you. Unsubscribe link at the bottom of every one, and it works.
